Aslan Burnu

If you are sailing from Cnidus eastwards, just under 2 NM, you will pass Aslan Burnu, meaning "Lion Point".  It was named from the Lion Tomb that Newton discovered there during his excavations of Cnidus around 1863.  The remnants of this huge monument, which originally was more than 120 feet in height, can still be seen on the top of the promontory, but the lion itself is now in the British Museum.  The tomb was a funerary monument erected by the Athenians after the naval battle that took  place off Cnidus in 394 BC, when Conon decisively defeated the Lacedaemonians.
