Kalkan (ancient Kalamaki)
For many years up until the 1980’s was inaccessible by road and the only way to visit this beautifully Bohemian style village was by sea. Originally Kalkan eked out a living from charcoal-burning, olive-growing, and fishing with a quaint harbour. The locals who used to tend the grain and apple on the huge plateau around the the mountain village of Bezirgan, which makes a great days excursion, now have been able to take advantage of the tourist boom.
The town has developed since the mid 1980’s and many Brits have retired here to this village where it clings to the mountainside. Kalkan makes a great base to visit the ancient Lycian cities of Patara, Xanthos, Tlos and Letoön. Patara also sports a fantastic sandy beach to spend the day relaxing, or in good weather you can anchor off the beach to swim ashore. Although the sea bed is shallow for at least 50 metres from the shores edge.
The small town also has some good supermarkets were you can stock up your provisions and they even give a yacht delivery service. You can also arrange sub-aqua diving from the harbour if you like floating through the marine life off this shoreline. You will have to pay for using the harbour and it can vary from 50 to 80 TL per night. The harbour is quite tight for space and has depths of 4 to 3 metres and you will need to use your anchor for 25 metres and go astern to the quay side, but you will be able to use electricity and water. There are also showers, toilets on the break water. You can also get your laundry done here.
The hotel Samira, on a Thursday evening, gives a fabulous Turkish night experience where you can enjoy a 3 course delicious meal, including a 27 plated meze (starters), followed by an Anatolian Dance group and a beautiful Turkish Belly Dancer giving a fabulous performance all for the price of 29 to 33 Turkish Lira.
